Originating from Southwest Asia and Southern to Central Europe, this biennial plant from the mint family is widely cultivated as an ornamental plant in temperate regions. However, its primary purpose is to produce essential oils used in liqueurs and perfumes.
Historically, sage was one of the saving herbs during the Middle Ages, commonly used by Greeks, Romans, and Arabs as a tonic or poultice for snake bites. Egyptian women consumed sage juice to enhance fertility, and it was said that those with sage in their gardens required no doctor.
